Welcome to Meghalaya. On arrival at Guwahati airport or railway station, you are met and transferred approx. 110 km (about 3 hours) to your hotel in Shillong, the former capital of Assam and today the capital of Meghalaya. Set among undulating pine-covered hills at 1,496 m, Shillong enjoys a mild climate and is known as the 'Scotland of the East'. The rest of the day is at leisure. Overnight in Shillong.
After breakfast, drive approx. 60 km (about 2 hours) to Cherrapunjee, at 4,400 ft one of the wettest places on earth, and check in. In the afternoon, tour the area to see Nohkalikai Falls, where water drops about 1,100 ft through green forest, take short treks through the terrain and watch the birdlife, and explore the Mawsmai Caves. On the way back, visit Elephant Falls, about 12 km from Shillong, a three-tiered waterfall known to the Khasi people as Ka Kshaid Lai Pateng Khohsiew. Overnight in Cherrapunjee.
After breakfast, drive to Mawlynnong, a small village about 90 km from Shillong near the Bangladesh border, recognised as the cleanest village in Asia in 2003 and in India in 2005. With 100% literacy among its roughly 95 households, it is especially lush during the monsoon, and its living root bridge, formed from the aerial roots of banyan fig trees, is a highlight. Later drive approx. 160 km (about 4 hours in total) back towards Shillong and check in. Overnight in Shillong.
After breakfast, drive approx. 100 km (about 3 hours) to Guwahati, the capital of Assam and the gateway to north-east India, set between the Brahmaputra River and the foothills of the Shillong plateau. After check-in, visit the Kamakhya Temple, a famous pilgrimage site dedicated to the tantric goddesses, and the Umananda Temple on Peacock Island in the middle of the Brahmaputra, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Evening at leisure. Overnight in Guwahati.
After breakfast, transfer to Guwahati airport or railway station for your onward journey.
